Get Work Experience, recently visited the UEA London campus and gave a short presentation to students. Some of the main points covered were:
The CV - the main tool to get work experience. They commented that they conducted some research with employers and found that 75% prefer a skills based CV. They suggested that a skills based CV could have the following format:
- Personal Details
- Skills & achievements - 2 or 3 lines of achievements and examples of where you demonstrated them
- Academic qualifications
- Activities & interests
Preparing for interviews:
- Call reception and ask about what people wear in the company
- Take contact details with you.
- Research the company, know who their competitors are, what they have recently done and what is happening in the market.
- Remember people hire people they like!
- Be honest, positive and enjoy it!
- Go in with confidence.
- Smile
- If it's relevant, bring examples of your work
During work experience - it's your responsibility to think what you want to get out of it. Make sure you get a job description and you are clear what they are expecting from you too.
- ask questions
- be positive
- attend as many meetings & conferences as possible, as this is a great way to expand your network and get yourself known.
Get Work Experience (GWE's) main clients are small to medium sized organisations (SME's) and some large corporations. Mentioned that unpaid internships are illegal and that you should at least get the minimum wage. They finished by saying that although work experience is important, don't compromise your studies - they are your priority!
