Blogs and blogging - some advice from an expert

This year at UEA London we had a Master class on 'Blogging'.  The speaker is a strategic communication consultant, writer, copywriter, blog writer and wordsmith.

It was emphasised that blogs are a very important business asset and the fastest growing means of mass communication, for the simple reason that they give you a presence.  Google loves blogs as the content is constantly changing.  For students and recent graduates, a link to a blog on a professional looking CV can be very impressive!

Blogs started in the 1980's, took off in the mid-90's and around 160 million people are blogging today.  Emphasis was made on the fact that you are never too young to start....One of the main reasons people write blogs is to share their experience and expertise with others.

If you are thinking of starting a blog some questions you might want to ask yourself are:
  1. Who is your audience?
  2. Why are you talking to them?
  3. What are you talking to them about?
  4. What do you want them to do?
Top tips for starting a blog:
  • In terms of colour, black on white is best
  • Try to write regularly
  • Remember, as Bill Gates said 'content is king'!
  • Think about what your reader wants to read
  • You want to create a buzz and have people talk about your blog
  • Use the blog to demonstrate your knowledge, ability and skills
  • Wordpress or blogspot are good sites to get started with
  • Think carefully about the name/title of your blog - go for something catchy
  • KISS - Keep it Simple Stupid!
